BJJ black belt Josh Griffiths demonstrates how to get technical to finish the armbar when dealing with strong opponents who defend well. Start by securing the lacing arm close to the collar on your bjj gi and grabbing the opponent's pants with the other hand. This setup allows you to maintain control and start creating separation in the opponent’s grip by leaning back slightly.

To manipulate the opponent further, you must use some deception, pulling on the opponent's elbow to make them resist by pulling back. Then you can capitalize on this reaction by punching your arm through the loosened grip. For a tighter hold, you can even cross your feet and opens your legs, securing control over the opponent’s head and torso.

As you prepares to finish, elevate your body while holding the pants, then lean back to apply more stress on the opponent's grip. If the grip remains, you can repeatedly pull on the arm to create openings. Securing the wrist with the thumb pointing upwards and maintaining a firm grip on the collar, finish the armbar. Make sure to drive your heels towards the mat and keep the knees tight to prevent your opponent from coming on top.
