BJJ Mat FAQ's
We offer a wide selection of high quality Jiu Jitsu mats for BJJ practitioners who are looking to set up an at-home BJJ training area.
Our home roll out mats are comparable to what you will find in most BJJ academies, constructed out of durable and high density foam, these mats are perfect for drilling, training, or sparring.
Our puzzle mats are specifically designed for at-home Jiu Jitsu training and are made from interlocking foam tiles that can be easily assembled and disassembled. They are also highly customizable and particularly popular for home use. We sell puzzle mats in both 1" and 1.5" thickness to match your level of training needs. We recommend the 1" thick mats for drilling and light training. The 1.5" thick puzzle mats are perfect for both drilling, training and sparring.
Tatami Mats or Smooth Mats?
Our home roll-out mats come in two different textures/finishes - tatami and smooth.
Tatami textured BJJ mats are designed to mimic the traditional mat surface found in traditional Jiu Jitsu academies. They have a raised, ribbed surface that provides a good grip for the practitioner's feet and hands. The textured surface also helps to prevent slipping and sliding during training. This type of mat is ideal for training throws, takedowns, and other techniques that require a good grip on the mat surface. They also provide a more realistic simulation for competition, as most competition mats are tatami textured. You are more prone to mat burns with Tatami textured mats, which is why we typically recommend getting the smooth finished mats for casual home training.
Smooth BJJ mats, on the other hand, have a smooth surface that is designed to provide a more forgiving training surface. They are less likely to cause mat burns and are easier on the joints. They are also easier to clean and maintain. This type of mat is ideal for training ground techniques, such as submissions and escapes, where a smooth surface allows for more fluid movement. They also provide a more comfortable training experience for people with sensitive skin.
How Large Are Our Jiu Jitsu Mats?
Our home roll out mats cover an area of 5' x 10'. Most of our customers order two mats to make a 10' x 10' training area.
Our home puzzle mats are just over 3' x 3' and are sold in sets of 4. A pack of 4 BJJ puzzle mats will cover a 13' x 13' training area.
How Do I Clean BJJ Mats?
Cleaning BJJ mats is an important part of maintaining them and ensuring they last for a long time, as well as help stop the spread of any skin diseases.
We recommend cleaning your mats after every use. First remove any debris or dust from the surface with a broom or vacuum cleaner. Next, using a mop or sponge, apply the cleaning solution of your choice to the surface of the mat and let it air dry.
