Inverted Spider Guard Straight Arm Lock
In this technique from the "Braulio Estima Closed Guard Techniques" series, Rafael Lovato Jr. teaches the "Inverted Spider Guard Straight Arm Lock," leveraging the dynamic positioning of spider guard for an effective submission.
Starting in spider guard with a double sleeve grip and one foot on the bicep, Rafael emphasizes controlling the opponent's posture using a collar grip. This setup allows significant control over the opponent's movements, making it difficult for them to advance or escape. When the opponent attempts to neutralize the threat by grabbing the pants of the free leg, Rafael uses this reaction to initiate his technique.
Rafael then performs a movement that begins with him scooting away to create distance and force the opponent to bend forward, further extending their arm. He then executes a spin and slight inversion, bringing his knee towards his ear to position the opponent's arm ideally in front of him. This alignment sets the stage for the arm lock.
Releasing the collar grip, Rafael grabs the opponent’s elbow and overlays his own elbow over the opponent's wrist, securing it in his armpit as he prepares to break the grip with a kick. This movement places the opponent's arm in a vulnerable position across Rafael’s hips.
To finalize the submission, Rafael rotates the opponent’s elbow against his hip and thigh, pinching his knees together to secure the arm. This position ensures that he has direct control over the application of pressure, making the submission both quick and effective. If the opponent attempts to adjust, Rafael is already positioned to transition into other attacks like an omoplata or further arm manipulations.
This technique showcases Rafael’s strategic use of spider guard to manipulate and control the opponent, setting up a swift and surprising arm lock that capitalizes on the opponent's extended arm and compromised posture.
