Unstoppable Armdrag Sweep
In this technique from the "Braulio Estima Closed Guard Techniques" series, Rafael Lovato Jr. demonstrates the "Unstoppable Armdrag Sweep" from an open guard setup, following unsuccessful attempts at securing a triangle or armbar due to the opponent's tight defense. Rafael starts by using a lapel grip on the gi fed over behind the opponent's tricep and elbow, setting the stage for the sweep.
Rafael creates a little space and then repositions by placing one hand on the mat and a foot against the opponent’s leg or thigh. This setup allows him to use the lapel grip to manipulate the opponent's arm, dragging the elbow across his body while simultaneously lifting his hips with his hand and foot on the mat.
As the opponent leans away to escape, Rafael uses their motion to execute the sweep. He lifts up, kicks out the opponent's leg, and rolls to his side, placing his elbow on the mat. This action disrupts the opponent's balance, opening up possibilities for taking the back or transitioning directly to top control.
This sweep is an excellent demonstration of using an opponent's reactions against them, maintaining grip control, and seamlessly moving between defensive setups and offensive maneuvers in the closed guard.
